In the early days of Christianity, when enemies of the faithful were everywhere, strangers could identify a fellow Christian with a simple symbol. One would make an arc in the sand and the other would complete the symbol by making the second arc. The two arcs created the image of a fish, the Ichthus symbol, or “Jesus Fish”.
